Adopt a Dog Month
Published October 6, 2020
Halloween is not the only holiday in October. October is also, Adopt a Dog month! There are about three million dogs in shelters across the nation. The American Humane Association responded to the increased number of dogs entering shelters by recognizing October as Adopt a Dog month in 1981.
A great way to observe this month is to adopt a new family member from your local shelter. Shelters will do their best to make a perfect match between the dog and new family. Each shelter has different protocols but stopping by can be a great first step. No matter the size or breed every dog needs a loving home.
If you are unable to adopt you can still participate by donating. Donations are used to pay for veterinary care, food and different adoption programs that increase adoption rates. Promoting a shelter’s Facebook or social media page can be an awesome way to make more people aware of what is going on locally. Volunteering your time for walks or play time can also be a great way to help improve the quality of the life for these dogs. Any chance for socialization or activity can raise adoption potential.
Whichever way you plan on observing this month, please know shelters and rescues appreciate your efforts. If you do welcome a new member into your family this month stop by the Barkery to pick up some awesome new items, get them used to a grooming experience, or take a training class!
