Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
Published May 26, 2020
It is time to think about training! Getting a dog, whether it be from a rescue, shelter, or breeder is a lot of work, and training is something that should be on your mind from day one! Finding the right information can be overwhelming, so I am here to help you!
Positive reinforcement training refers to the introduction of a desirable reward after a behavior. Not only is positive reinforcement the ethical choice but it is supported by science and has been proven to be the most effective way of teaching your dog behaviors from basic obedience to fun tricks. The use of prong, electric or choke collars are considered aversive and not the optimal tool to use for training.
When searching for a trainer be sure to look for descriptive words such as “positive reinforcement,” “force free,” and/or “science based.” Do not be shy about asking your potential trainer questions involving ethics and practices. A good trainer will be happy to discuss these topics with you. Words to avoid when researching trainers are “balanced,” “e-collar training,” “dominance,” “alpha,” and “pack”. Unfortunately, in the past these words were frequently used when speaking about training. However, in recent years these terms have proven to be terribly faulty.

Training your dog should be fun and rewarding for everyone involved. It is an opportunity to bond and build trust and confidence within this new relationship. Find a trainer who will aid in that positive journey, and you will be impressed by your abilities as a trainer and what your dog can learn.
